Biography

‘Like an open mic on a psychiatrist’s couch, Robs drawings are a symphony of futile longing. A Barium meal for the nations soul. Cherry's crude characters revel in their despair.’

Stuart Mckenzie

Rob Cherry is a self taught artist who lives and works in Wellington, New Zealand. He has maintained a diverse artistic practice for over four decades.

Rob started out with drawing and print making in the late 1980’s and has since explored hard edged abstraction, sculpture, readymades, collage and photography.

More recently he has returned to his crude, psychological and revealing drawing style as a way of attempting to understand and/or satirise the world around us and within him.

Influenced by artists such as Beni Bishof, Dash Snow and Anne-Marie Schneider, Cherry’s work confronts the absurdity, awe, pain, shame, disappointment and joy of our existence.
