Richard Elderton
Interpretation of colour, paint application, composition, subject matter and sensibility; my approach has been to refine and distil these five core elements in my practice, ensuring that each piece— and the body of work as a whole— maintains a clear, intrinsic balance.
Born in Jōetsu, Japan and raised in Whakatū Nelson, painter Richard Elderton draws from a diverse range of artistic influences, most notably his bicultural upbringing. His luminous oil works - often rooted in his own photographic studies of the natural world - blend visual cues from his early life in Japan with the landscapes and sensibilities of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Now based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Elderton approaches painting as a form of visual poetry, with each work unfolding through rhythm, intuition, and a deep engagement with process.
Since graduating from the Ilam School of Fine Arts with First Class Honours in 2020, Elderton’s work has been widely exhibited throughout Aotearoa, with notable shows at the Marlborough Art Gallery, City Art Depot, Millennium Public Art Gallery, The Den Gallery, Chambers Art Gallery and the Aotearoa Art Fair. In 2019 he was awarded the Grant Lingard Scholarship, and also that year won the Sawtell-Turner Prize in Painting.
