Neil Pardington
‘I think it’s whatever I’m doing at the time that makes me ‘what I am’.’
Neil Pardington is a filmmaker and photographer who lives and works in Wellington, New Zealand. His works are held in institutions across New Zealand, including the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, as well as Christchurch Art Gallery, Te Puna o Waiwhetu.
Described by the NZ Arts Foundation as ‘straight photography with a twist’, Pardington’s practice operates in the fluid space between documentary and conceptual photography, infusing the objective truth of photographic representation with the subjectivity of experience and perception. Neil’s imagery often focuses on abandoned interiors, with spaces which contrast furnishings against the emptiness of their surroundings. In doing so, prosaic features such as tables or chairs become imbued with a poignancy evocative of both history and loss.
Of Kai Tahu, Kati Mamoe, Kati Waewae Māori and Pākeha descent, Pardington also frequently explores cultural intersections and boundaries as they are physically embodied in interior spaces.
Outside of photography, Neil is a director of MAP Film Productions. He has produced, written and directed a number of short films, including Losing Sleep, Chinese Whispers and The Dig, selected for screening at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994.
