Katherine Claypole | Kodachroma: {Suite} Ponsonby
Katherine Claypole is known for her hand-stitched drawings and intricately collaged artwork. In her latest series Kodachrome, carefully planned geometric patterns are first rendered on graph paper, then meticulously plotted on to painted canvas using a custom-made needle tool. Patterns are then hand-stitched in cotton thread; the resulting field of stitches creating a visual rhythm intended to draw the viewer’s eye across the surface. Illusionary space is revealed in the work, and the intensity of colour becomes evident. Colours are chosen specifically from a mid-century palette: a minty green, a soft blush pink, a muted blue, a cool yellow and a piecing red combine to evoke the memory of leafing through National Geographic magazines, or the richly saturated images of Kodachrome film.
