Disenfranchised grief simmers at the heart of Angela Singer's new exhibition Soft Star.
Singer, a mixed-media artist, explores the profound relationships we have shared with past animal family members, and the associated grief and mourning which is often not socially legitimatised.
For Singer, companion animals are transitional creatures, crossing between the worlds of human and animal, domestic and wild, familiar yet unknowable. They transform our lives through deep loving bonds and connection to mysterious nature.
Following the death of her cat, Singer’s home has lost its constant shadow of comfort and become a place of haunting memories; ceramic ghost cats pounce on laser dots, drink from a bedside glass with paw, hunt a bird in an overgrown garden, and ride a robot vacuum cleaner across the floor.
Kitsch stitched kitset cats and dogs have been transformed into memorials. A disquieting ghost cat, Sleep When It’s Light, appears to look downward, ever watchful. A German Shepherd dog, Pet Cemetery, forms the top layer of three dogs, referencing previous companions that came before them.
