Paepaehakumanu Motutara | Government Gardens: {Suite}
Opening event: 5:30 - 7pm Thursday 18 September.
The history of photography in Rotorua is closely tied to its development as a tourist destination, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Early photographers captured images of the region’s natural beauty, geothermal activity, and Māori culture, transforming them into postcards and booklets to promote Rotorua.
Originally known as Paepaehakumanu Motutara, the Government Gardens have been very well-photographed over the years. Points of interest include the Arawa Soldiers Memorial, geothermal features, plant nursery, bowls and croquet lawns, a 9 hole lake-side golf course and a number of historic buildings. Yes, it has it all.
This exhibition features a classic 1890 photo of the entry ‘Gate’ by James Blencowe,
three works by Ans Westra, and quirky images of monuments and buildings by Robin
Morrison and Peter Peryer. Completing the show are three Neil Pardington images
being shown for the first time, including a lake view from Motutara to Kawaha Point.
