1 - 17 March 2023
Overview

The current exhibition in Ponsonby showcases the works of three of the gallery artists, Jaimee Peters, Jeffrey Harris and Richard Lewer.

The paintings on show by Jaimee Peters were created for an exhibition {Suite} held in collaboration with Maman Boutique in Remuera.  Click here to read Jaimee's interview about the exhibition and her artistic process.

Jeffrey Harris is one of New Zealand's foremost figurative painters and this collection of early drawings show the scope of his practise.  A group of religious scences dating from the 1970s and 1980s show Harris's interest in thematic concerns comparable to those of his contemporaries Tony Fomison, Rudolph Gopas and Philip Clairmont in their expressionist exploration of an inner emotional state. Isolation, human suffering, sacrifice and the tragic frailty of life are recurrent themes suggested through Harris’ own lexicon of religious symbology, which are themselves indebted to the traditions of the early Renaissance masters.

Richard Lewer is another artist who has frequently returned to images of the crucifixion - An image universally synonymous with death, or for practicing Christians a symbol of redemption.  “The crucifix, to me,” Lewer states, “is an unmistakable visual representation of absolute vulnerability, with its twisted human form evidence of extreme physical suffering, whereas for others, it offers a beacon of hope, as with death there is always the opportunity to transcend this life to a better place.”
