Vault shrine to photographer Ans Westra
Down a few flights of meandering stairs beneath a lane near Courtenay Place, a former underground bank vault has been set up like a shrine to Ans Westra.
When the iconic photographer died early in 2023, her three adult children and her gallery dealer, David Alsop, of Suite Gallery, sought to find a repository for her many things: the cameras she collected, her archive of proof sheets, prints, materials and paraphernalia, along with special treasures from her home which offer an intimate glimpse of the Wellington woman behind the lens. From next month, Suite Gallery is holding a three-month celebration of the late artist with a number of exhibitions and community initiatives.
