Jaimee Peters | New Works: {Suite} Wellington

17 August - 16 September 2023
Overview

{Suite} Wellington is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Jaimee Peters (Te Rarawa, Ngāti  Kuri, Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa).

Jaimee creates energetic compositions based on brutalist architecture.  Her paintings evoke a world of instability, and we are taken from abstraction to figuration and back again as we puzzle of whether to read them as marks on a surface or forms in an imagined space.

Areas of paint are by turns, sharp edged and flat, and sumptuously fluid.  Cool, steely, urban tones are contrasted with soft, opaline pastels.  These swathes of paint – layered one upon another – impart a sense of erasure and flux and are a reminder that we are seeing but a final fragment of the artist’s process.

Jaimee Peters has a BFA from Ilam, University of Canterbury, and lives and works in Wellington.
