Jeffrey Harris stands as one of Aotearoa’s most distinguished and original painters – an artist whose decades-long practice has shaped a deeply personal yet widely resonant visual language. Since he first exhibited in 1969, Harris has created a body of work that draws on memory, lived experience and the enduring weight of human emotion, positioning him as a pivotal figure within New Zealand’s art history.
His works are built around simple but psychologically-charged scenes. Rather than telling clear stories, these settings become spaces to explore what it means to be human. Emotions like love and hate, hope and despair sit side by side, while rituals and recurring symbols invite further reflection - birds hint at the human spirit, roads suggest journeys, and the crucifix speaks to suffering and resilience.
In recent years, Harris has focussed primarily on small-scale works, bringing an added sense of intimacy and intensity. Based in Ōtepoti Dunedin, this is Harris’s second exhibition of new works presented by {Suite} Gallery in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
