What happens when Māori culture meets the world of collectible designer toys? An upcoming exhibition at {Suite} Gallery in Ponsonby celebrates a distinctive new take on Māori art and identity, showcasing superhero figurines created by TeeToys. Bringing together contemporary art, pop culture and collectible design, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on how Māori stories, imagery and identity can be expressed through an unexpected creative medium.

The collection features an eclectic cast of recognisable figures, from Dame Whina Cooper to Jake the Muss. Contemporary political personalities Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke and Winston Peters appear alongside internationally acclaimed opera star Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Billy T James, in a collection that reflects the complexity, contradictions and character of modern Aotearoa New Zealand.

At the heart of the exhibition is Tim Provise, founder of TeeToys. With the appeal of designer collectibles and the individuality of handmade artworks, Tim’s work shows what art can be, and asks who it is for, and where cultural expression can find a home.

Presented at {Suite} Gallery in Ponsonby, this exhibition will appeal to art lovers, collectors, design enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the evolving expression of Māori identity in contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand.  Part pop-culture tribute, part artistic provocation; what does heroism mean today?
