Westra Loves Bikes: {Suite}
Past exhibition
Please join us at 189 Ponsonby Road from 5:30-7:30pm on Thursday 2 July, to celebrate an exhibition of Ans Westra images that will run on digital screens of the Locky Dock network from Whangārei to Dunedin. With special guest Sir Bob Harvey.
Bikes are the original egalitarian vehicle in Aotearoa. They’ve been the main mode of transport for generations of Kiwis. They’re also woven into the stories and rituals in our streets and communities. Ans Westra, one of our country’s most renowned social documentary photographers, captured the human moments in everyday life over many decades.
It is striking just how many images of people on bikes there are in the Ans Westra archive. The exhibition images will be on show at {Suite} Gallery in Tāmaki Makaurau in the first week of July, before starting to run on the digital screens of the Locky Dock network in 12 cities from Whangārei to Dunedin.
“Ans images are iconic. They show us the romance and freedom of biking as integral in our street culture in Aotearoa. There’s a pre-peak-car nostalgia to the photos that are a reminder of how normal biking is for Kiwi”. Says Cleve Cameron, founder of Locky Dock.
