Robin Morrison | The South Island of New Zealand From the Road : {Suite}
-
“I have loved the South Island for many years and in 1979 I was able to express that feeling by spending six months photographing the land, its people and the mark they have left on this country. This island is usually photographed by and for those whose only visual reality is the scenic and the picturesque. These photographs present an alternative view.” – Robin Morrison
Robin Morrison (1944-1993) is one of Aotearoa’s most celebrated photographers, known for his unpretentious yet deeply perceptive images of everyday life. This exhibition centres on a pivotal body of work made during the winter of 1979 when helped by an Arts Council grant, Morrison and his family spent six months travelling more than 18,000 miles across Te Waipounamu. From this journey emerged a rich and enduring portrait of the South Island, not as a picture postcard, but as a lived and shaped environment.
-
Photographing from the road, Morrison turned his attention to the man-made landscape: houses, pubs, shopfronts, lodges, and roadside details that hint at human presence. Working in colour, he captured the distinctive ways people inscribed themselves onto the land, through painted facades, improvised structures, and subtle acts of habitation.
Across the works, multiple approaches unfold. Documentary moments sit alongside idiosyncratic landscapes and studies of vernacular architecture, while traces of human activity – often without any humans actually present – evoke a distinctly New Zealand sense of space and emptiness.
Originally published in 1981, The South Island of New Zealand From the Road cemented Morrison’s place in Aotearoa’s photographic history. It was the first photographic book to win a New Zealand Book Award, however, despite its success, the book wasn’t reprinted once it sold out. In 2023 the family published a new edition of the book alongside an exhibition at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
-
Now, this exhibition has images selected by Morrison’s sons, Jake and Keir, and {Suite} Director David Alsop. This is the second exhibition co-ordinated by them, and is a continuation of their efforts to bring Robin’s work back into the public view.
